The PSPL and US Club Soccer to offer new recreational soccer league in Puget Sound

SEATTLE – (April 2, 2015) - The Puget Sound Premier League is excited to announce the formation of a US Club Soccer-sanctioned Recreational Soccer League to kick off in the Fall 2015 season.

Dubbed the Puget Sound Recreational Soccer League, it will include about 10 initial clubs, roughly 220 teams and nearly 2,500 players.  The league’s geographical boundary will stretch to Tacoma to the south, Sumner and Puyallup to the east and Issaquah and Renton to the north and west respectively. The league will be divided into two divisions - north and south. Teams will conclude the fall season with the Puget Sound Rec Cup tournament.

The aim of the league is to bring more attention and support to the recreational soccer player, team and club. The PSPL will be offering free player clinics with PSPL Technical Director Eddie Henderson and will organize a Rec Coaching Summit in August for recreational coaches.

"We are looking forward to introducing our new Coach Technical Training and Player Technical training to all the participants of the league," Henderson said. " The goal is to educate coaches and players in a league that is all about development, fun and passion."

Under the new league, teams also will have access to high quality Team Pages and well-organized league standings and schedules. The fall season will be composed of 10-12 games for U11 teams and older.

"Our aim is to offer all rec teams a league to call their own and one that supports their love for the game and one that lavishes the attention on them," said Stanley Holmes, president of the PSPL.  "Rec soccer is fundamental to the game and we hope to help it grow and flourish long into the future."

An equally important goal for the league is to offer high quality services and programming while operating an efficient, low-cost league. Simply put: the PSPL aims to provide rec players and their families more value for their money. "We are confident we can deliver better than any other organization," Holmes said. "We have a proven track record."

Clubs committed to joining the new Puget Sound Rec League, include: Issaquah Soccer Club (ISC/Gunners), Sumner Soccer Club, Puyallup Soccer Union, Cascade Foothills Soccer Club, Franklin Pierce Soccer Club, Cascade Soccer Club, Maple Valley, FME, Mount Rainier FC and others.

"We are excited to be a part of the formation of this new league and part of US Club," said Dan Brown, president Sumner Soccer Club. "The PSPL has shown over the last few years that they can put together a great program for Select level soccer and we are confident with that along with the many other clubs involved we will have a strong league."

“ISC is excited to join the PSPL to expand opportunities for young athletes to participate in recreational soccer in Western Washington,” said Joe Yellig, ISC executive director.  “The PSPL has been successful in the growth of youth soccer in the community through its premier and select leagues, and this is another positive step that we are excited to join.”

The Puget Sound Rec League will be sanctioned by US Club Soccer and managed by the PSPL. The two organizations have worked together for more than five years in Washington state to offer competitive programming opportunities. During that time, the PSPL has grown from just 12 teams to more than 1,000 teams that participate in its leagues, tournaments and various events.

"US Club Soccer is very excited about the new PSPL recreation league," said Gabe Rood, US Club Soccer's Western Region membership representative. "The PSPL has run a professional organization for the competitive clubs and we are confident the new rec league will operate in the same professional manner for the recreation clubs. We look forward to working with the PSPL and the clubs so the players can enjoy playing the beautiful game."

US Club Soccer is a National Association member of the U.S. Soccer Federation. It consists of members throughout the country and is led by people with technical and playing experience in soccer - current and former players, coaches and directors.
